January 10, 2005 Small update this time, but a fairly significant
one--say hello to another whole spankin' new category: Kim Possible! It only
has three pictures for now, but I hope to add more later. Enjoy and have a
nice daycycle, Friend Citizen.
Megavolt! My first attempt at drawing everybody's
favourite electric rodent (eat THAT Pikachu!). And he doesn't look too happy
at the bad job I did on him, either. Glad he's not able to REALLY zap me...
"Together, Morgana, you and I can rule the
cosmos!" In this picture, Chaotica, Evil Overlord of Planet X (played by
Megavolt), rants about the power of the Destructo Beam...while Arachnia, Queen
of the Spider People (played by Morgana McCawber) looks less than impressed.
This is a crossover with "Captain Proton!", a very funny holodeck program done
to look like an old 1930's science-fiction serial, on Star Trek: Voyager.
Chaotica, the main villian, and Arachnia, Queen of the Spider People, are two
of the main characters. (In case you're now thinking this sounds a bit
familiar...YES, it IS where my screen name comes from. "Captain Chaotica!!" is
a combo of the main good guy's title and the main bad guy's name. I don't know
WHY I combined them, don't ask me...) Chaotica is a very melodramatic, ranting,
insane mad scientist type, with a weird evil laugh and a tendency to make
dangerous high-tech (well, THEIR idea of high tech, in the '30s) gadgets. He
is also a classic "evil overlord" type...so, when I saw Megavolt playing the
"Evil Cosmic Overlord" on the episode "Whirled History", something just went
CLICK and I realised he'd be PERFECT for the part of Chaotica! And the more I
thought about both characters, the more similarities I saw. Thus, a really
wacky and strange crossover idea was born. It flourished even better when I
realised how good of casting Morgana is for Queen Arachnia...not just in looks,
but in temperment and alignment, too! And the fact that Chaotica has lightning
bolts on his robe--nicely symbolising Megavolt's electrical powers--doesn't hurt
nothin' either.
Anyway. If you haven't seen BOTH shows, then you won't get the joke. But TRUST
me, these Darkwing characters are PERFECT "casting"! :)
This picture was not drawn in shades of grey, it was originally colour and then
TURNED black and white--as _real_ black and white movies were, of course,
colour at the time--in REAL life...to the people _on the set_. To see what it
looked like "on the set" (i.e., with the colour still in), click
HERE.
To see the Destructo Beam in all its glory (hey, I'm proud of it, okay?)
without the people in front of it, click HERE. The
costumes and the hairdos were all copied off of actual Voyager screenshots, or
as well as I COULD, considering that the only screenshots I could find were
rather blurry. The Destructo Beam, however, I completely made up out of my own
head....trying to make it look like the right STYLE for the period, of course
(big, gaudy, lots of blinky lights and fancy doohickeys that do absolutely
nothing but _look_ good) and it bears little resemblance to the actual
Destructo Beam in the show...aside from general style. The light bulbs and
the lightning stripe were added because of Megavolt's influence...hee hee...I
mean, it is HIM playing this Evil Overlord, is it not? :)
"Um...d'ya know which way is the Teleportation
classroom? It keeps moving around..." Young Master Sputterspark asks for
directions at Hogwart's. More crossover madness! A while ago, I had some fun
figuring out which Houses various Darkwing characters would get Sorted into,
just for the heck of it, that's what inspired this picture. Notice the trim on
his robes is blue--that means he's a Ravenclaw. Well, where ELSE would the
official Science Geek of St. Canard High go...?
Originally this was gonna be MEGAVOLT, ya know, the adult supervillian version,
going to Hogwarts. But this turns out so much better. I guess this also
counts as my very first time drawing him as Elmo, huh?
It's not "Paranoia" if they really ARE after you! Here we have Megavolt and
Quackerjack as "Troubleshooters" from the role-playing game "Paranoia". The
universe of that game would take too long to explain here, but TRUST me, they
do both fit in quite well, especially Megavolt, who is almost MADE for the
Paranoia universe it seems. It's a darkly humourous futuristic society, full
of wacky inventions and crazed robots and mutants, but also has very strict
rules--which is why I had to tone down Quackerjack's jester outfit (if he wore
ALL the colours it has, he'd get shot!) But notice it still looks,
well..._jester_ ish! :P Megavolt's yellow-striped Registered Mutant jumpsuit
is a nice look on him, or maybe it's just me. And notice the rocket-powered
pogo stick! ;)
(To read more about the game/universe of "Paranoia", click HERE
to read a thing I wrote up about it, complete with character-sheets/bios for Megavolt and Quackerjack's characters. It won't tell you EVERYTHING
about life in Alpha Complex, but should give you a good idea to go on. If you get curious from reading that and want to find out more, well, then...stop
by your local gaming/comic book store and check it out. You just might like it. ;))
Paradox! This is a scene from my own story,
"Phantom Hero (The Innocents"). In this scene...well, I'm not going to tell you what's going on!
I want people to read the story for themselves and find out! ;) (Although those of you who are (a)
observant and (b) knowledgeable about the show at the "deep fan, have seen ALL the episodes at least twice" level
will be able to make a pretty good guess about _part_ of what's going on here, just by looking at it...)
Anyway...okay, I'll throw you a bone--it's a time-travel story (duh) and is most heavily based off of one of my
favourite episodes of the series ever, "Clash Reunion" (although there are elements of other episodes I like, such as "Time
and Punishment" in there, too). I tried to make it as well-written and in-character as I could, and there are (gasp!) absolutely NO
Mary Sue characters, and nobody "hooks up"--there's no fangirlishness whatsoever! Anyway, you can find this story both at
Fanfiction.net (in the Darkwing section, doy) and also at "ToasterOven.com", if you want to see it. (My name at Fanfiction.net is "Rydia
Erdrick Landale", but yes, that's still me. It's not as if Rydia is a different person and I stole her credit or something. :P)
Megawatt Saves the Prom! (Or ATTEMPTS to, anyway...)
This picture is an illustration for my second Darkwing story, "Reversed Polarity". The picture actually came first, THEN
the story, but both were inspired by a comment that somebody said about my _first_ Darkwing story ("Phantom Hero (The Innocents)") at Fanfiction.net...something about how, at some point, in the _Negaverse_
timeline, Negaduck must have made _his_ first appearance at his senior prom and tried to DESTROY it! (As opposed to the "normalverse" version, in which the _good_
guy Drake Mallard becomes _Darkwing_ Duck for the first time at _his_ prom, and tries to SAVE everybody--from the newly-created Megavolt.) Well, that comment
suddenly sparked off (no electricity pun intended) my creative tendencies, and I thought, "Hey, that's right, Negaduck _would_ have tried to destroy the prom...and who...exactly...would
be the one who tried to _stop_ him, in that universe? Why...MEGAVOLT, of course! In the _Negaverse_, he's a GOOD guy, after all! Whoah, what a cool idea!" So I instantly had to
draw a picture of that opposite-version fateful first fight. (I sounded like Darkwing for a second there...)
So, here we have the GOOD guy Megavolt facing off against the newly-created Negaduck, both of them only 17. (Aww. :P) I've drawn Megsy before many times and in many forms, of course (hey,
what can I say...he's just plain fun to draw. Very expressive face, and you can CUT LOOSE with special-effects when it comes to showing his powers...) but this is my first time drawing Negaduck, it seems. (Not
counting his "Switchverse" counterpart, Nemesis.) I apologise for the chainsaw--I couldn't find a screenshot of him carrying one so I had to completely make something up. Oh, well. At least you
get the impression that what he's holding is designed to cause _harm_, anyway. I also consider it to be something of a triumph that I managed to make him come across as menacing, even while wearing THAT outfit. (giggle)
"What AM I?!"
Another picture from my second Darkwing fanfic, "Reversed Polarity", here we
see Nega-Elmo Sputterspark shortly after he recieved his massive shock...and
doesn't know what the heck is going on. Unlike the "normal" Megavolt, who went
cheerfully insane as a result of his Accident and became a villian...Nega-Elmo
kept (most of) his sanity but lost his memory...leaving an extremely confused
little mutant who doesn't WANT these dangerous powers ("I can't be around normal
people anymore! I might _hurt_ them!"), is frightened of his own self...and
doesn't even know WHAT he is, let alone _who_. A rather sad picture from what
is possibly one of the most _angsty_ moments in any of my fics...odd when you
consider that it's based off a show mainly known for COMEDY. I don't normally
DO, or even _like_, "angst", but in this story, at this particular moment...it
was appropriate. Not fake, sappy, overdone angst shoved down the reader's throat,
but _real_ sadness for real reasons.
This one I did as sort of an "experiment in style", and deliberately so. The
scribbly messyness and ragged edges point up the fact that he's just been put
through the wringer (and the fact that his clothes are now CATCHING ON FIRE just
by being in contact with his skin...er, fur). Notice also that he's actually
_furry_, something I rarely do with my anthro character pictures. (And the FUR
is standing on end, too! ;)) As for the hair, yes, I _know_it should be in an
Afro, but I thought having the long hairs stick STRAIGHT out in delicate
strands would be cuter. :P It also, again, looks more ragged and pathetic.
This whole picture has the strange combination of being funny-looking but sad at the
same time...
And even though I KNOW that if I try it I'll get knocked halfway into next
millenium, I still want to _hug_ the poor little guy. Awww...
Negaduck's...Yearbook Picture?! Yep. Well, the dark version of Drake Mallard at age 17, if you want to get technical (he's not actually _Negaduck_ in this picture...quite...YET...) Click
HERE to see the picture at its original size and colour...and notice WHICH colours they are, exactly, while you're at it.
"And so, it begins..." In this rather chilling
moment from the story "Reversed Polarity", Nega-Drake finds some old costuming
stuff in his basement--including a black _mask_ and cape...and decides that
tonight he's going to blow up the school, at the prom, but NOT as plain old
"Drake the Dweeb", no. Tonight, the school will be destroyed by (sinister
voice) _someone else_...
Mad Scientist Sputterspark And here we have the Nega-Elmo's yearbook picture. Click HERE to see the original colour version.
Both "yearbook pictures" are illustrations for the story "Reversed Polarity".
Morning in the Negaverse. Another illustration for the
story "Reversed Polarity" (which I decided to just go ahead and make into an
_illustrated_ story.) Here we see Megavolt making coffee HIS way! :P (The badly-drawn
little duck girl is supposed to be Nega-Gosalyn...I know I messed up on her beak, but oh well.)
Also, notice that if you look out the window, you can see Bushroot sleeping outside in the yard. ;) It's not because they MAKE
him sleep out there...he WANTS to! He _is_ a PLANT, after all...
"BWAHAHAHAHA!" Here, we see the Negaversion of Elmo Sputterspark in full "dark"
mode, as his "mad scientist" persona. (from the story "Reversed Polarity", of
course.) He's currently freaking out Hamm String and Prina Lott (the remote
control in his hand is the one that makes the doors close automatically behind
them) and enjoying himself far too much. Watch out, Elmo, you might not want to
make people think you're TOO dangerous...you'll reGRET it...
"Blue" The name describes both the mood and the look of
this piece, of course. This is technically an illustration from "Reversed
Polarity" (it shows young Nega-Megs realising that his life is going to be very
lonely from now on, as he moves into the abandoned lighthouse one dark night in
June) but it could _also_ be a shot of the "normal" Megs at age 17, I think.
EVERYBODY gets sad and lonely sometimes, even crazed villians...
I originally did this picture in the normal colours but then, as an experiment,
decided to do everything in different shades of blue--and ended up liking this
version better. The blue colour not only makes it look more like night-time, but
also, of course, makes the picture seem sadder.
(And incidentally, anybody who starts singing a certain Eiffel 65 song here is
going to find out what happens when a supercharged superhero shakes hands with
you...with his gloves OFF. (snicker))
Pirate Duel! Darkwing Doubloon seriously rethinks his choice of weapon in this picture, somewhat based
off a scene in the episode "Darkwing Doubloon". (duh). I have yet to see ANY
other fan-art based off of this episode, so as far as I know I'm being fairly
original. :) Anyway, there _was_ a scene in which Darkwing and Megavolt
(briefly) duelled with each other while standing on a boom, high up above the
deck, in the rigging, etc.--very properly pirate-movie-ish--but as far as I can
recall, Darkwing Doubloon was _never_ actually stupid enough to try to "clash"
his metal sword with Megavolt's electrical one...he just said something
sarcastic about Megsy's "magnetic" personality and threw some magnets at him.
But, having the sick sense of humour that I do, I decided to draw what would
happen if he WAS stupid enough to cross swords with pirate-Megavolt. :P (It's
not that I dislikeDarkwing, by the way...I just felt like being silly.)
"Fire and Lightning" This is a picture based off of somebody _else's_ fanfic,
namely, in this case, "Triptych", by Aurora. It's the third in her trilogy
introducing her own character, "Luminas", who I at first THOUGHT was going to
be a Mary Sue type, but, upon actually _reading_ the stories, I was pleasantly
surprised. Anyway. The above picture is from the third story, in which we get to see
the Villians' Charity Ball (which I thought was a funny concept in the first
place (giggle)) and at one point, Luminas asks Megavolt to dance, just because,
hey, they're at a ball, people expect it. (They're NOT actually a couple...just
friends, and even _that_ took a while to develop.) Luminas's dress here is what
was described in the story, and Megavolt was described as wearing a "yellow
tuxedo". I read that and thought, "I just HAVE to draw this!" so I scribbled down a rough draft version right then, even though it was late at night and I was tired. :P
Later on, I cleaned it up and added the shading and so forth, to get what you see here.
I do rather like the way Luminas's expression came out--it seems to be saying "I'm
not taking this situation seriously. I'm just _humouring_ it." (Personality-wise, it
also reminds me of Megaera, a bit, for some reason...
I just hope Aurora doesn't mind the weird way I drew her character. :P
Bushroot! This "villian" may seem like poison ivy to
St. Canard and Darkwing's crimefighting, but he's really just a shy violet. ;)
Bushroot was my first favourite character on the show; he has since been
replaced in the "top spot" by Megavolt, but it's still a pretty _close_ tie.
(And since both of my faves are _villians_, that tells you something about me,
huh?) Notice, also, that both of them are sort of mad-scientist types...I like
my characters (good or bad) to be _intelligent_, and creative...
This picture is my first attempt at drawing him. I drew him as dancing around
the greenhouse and being happy (and using his powers on random flowers for no
reason) because he's almost NEVER happy on the actual show--he's so sad and
lonely (a big part of why I feel for him, of course.) In this picture,
however, he is happy to be what he is and no longer ashamed of being a plant
(hence the quote in the corner). I was going for a feeling of grace, easy,
fluid movement, motion for the sheer joy of motion itself, and happy, bounteous,
blooming _life_. All the soft graceful curves were chosen very much on purpose
to give this picture the right "flow". Don't know if it worked, but hey, I
gotta point out these things, after going to tons of work to do them. ;)
"Now THERE'S Something You Don't See Every Day." Okay...I
confess, I have _no_ idea what's going on with this picture. See, most of my
Darkwing artwork is done by looking at screenshots while I draw and being very _very_
careful at all times...but one day, I thought it might be fun to do a simple "doodle"
type sketch of a Darkwing character or two, from just memory alone. (Yes, this is from
memory. Yes, I agree that this is the point at which I need to put down the tapes and come
away from the VCR slowly, with my hands up. :P) So I started off just doing random
doodles of characters' faces (doing them in MSPaint, as are my other pictures, but _freehand_,
and using the default thickness paintbrush, which is why the thicker, more "cartoony" outlines)
and I started off by drawing the faces of Megavolt and Bushroot, my two favourite characters.
Well, after that, I then thought I should draw their whole selves instead of having heads floating in
mid-air, so I did, and then I just HAD to colour them in, and then, being _me_, I just HAD to put
_shading_...so, what was originally meant to be a simple, quick, casual, "toss-it-off-for-fun" doodle
ended up being...way more complex. And this surprises you _how_? :P
What _does_ surprise ME, however, is the pose and expressions they ended up with. It appears that Bushroot is
sad about something...and MEGAVOLT, of all people, is trying to cheer him up? Those two _totally_ don't get along!
Originally, the expressions were different--Bushroot looked worried/doubtful and Megavolt had this evil conspiratorial
_leer_ on his face, like he was trying to talk Bushroot into going along with an evil plan. (Which is only _slightly_ less
likely than what's happening in the finished picture.) But I like this way better...it's sort of sweet. And...in-character or
not, come on, admit it...at least some of you went "Awww" when you first saw this picture, didn't you? ;)
What can I say...sometimes, when I'm drawing, the picture just gets AWAY from me and does whatever _it_ wants, regardless of rhyme or reason.
This is one of those times. If you really _want_ to ask two of the most powerful mutants in all St. Canard what they're thinking, let me know.
Me, I'll be sitting over here.
...WAY over here. ;)
The Fearsome...FEMMES?! First picture I drew
in what I am now calling the "Switchverse" series. This takes a bit of
explanation. It's not quite the Ranma 1/2 idea, where people plunge into
"Spring of Drowned Girl" and turn into female versions of themselves, and it's
certainly NOT the Fearsome Five themselves in drag. This is an _alternate
universe_, where everybody is the opposite gender from what they are on the
actual show--see a certain infamous "Red Dwarf" episode for my inspiration. ;)
A silly but fun experiment in creativity and thought-excercises, to find out
what they'd look ilke this way. I like the lady Negaduck best, the look in her
eyes is positively _chilling_ and I dressed her up as a 1940's film noir style
"femme fatale". Which works as Darkwing (and Negaduck)'s clothes and modus
operandi are also rather film noir to begin with, at least I have always
thought. So is his theme song. Anyway, this is gonna sound stupid, but the
look in her eyes FREAKED me so much, the entire time I was drawing everybody else--I
drew her first, being the main character, of course--that I had to finish up
the rest of the picture quickly! Yeah, yeah, I'm a wimp...
The one I'm LEAST happy with is the lady Quackerjack. I just could NOT make
her look pretty or even feminine at all, and in my zeal to give her a new
outfit, I sorta neglected to give her a _good_ new outfit. Ah, well.
Regina Bushroot, "Rose Princess" Second in the
"Switchverse" series. Here we see Regina Bushroot in her element, done up in
a lovely princess gown. (Since the name "Regina" means "queen", snooty/fancy
clothes are actually rather appropriate.) This lovely flower (literally!) of
St. Canard looks as if she's ready to go to the ball, doesn't she? In a
pumpkin coach that is _still_ a pumpkin, naturally. Who needs wheels when
you've got goddess-like mutant powers? ;) _Yes_, it's the same background as
with Reggie (notice that Regina _also_ nicknames down to Reggie or Reg)--hey,
after I spent all that time drawing that @#$$ing complicated flower, I wasn't
gonna WASTE it! :P Her outfit was based off of descriptions of what the Xanth
character Rose of Roogna likes to wear (who seems to have at least one foot,
if not a whole leg, in the plant kingdom herself, even though she's called
"human", but that's another story.)
"Sowing the Seeds of Trouble"... Here we have Dr.
Regina Bushroot...Before. As in, as a full duck. In this scene, she is, as you
can see, setting up the experiment that will (although she doesn't _know_ it)
throw her bodily into the plant kingdom--and out of society forever. Oh,
dear...
Now, the original duck Reggie was _bald_, so how to make a girl look like him,
considering that women usually don't go bald like that? The answer came to me
one day--give her a frumpy, losery-looking hairstyle, and it'll be more or less
the same basic _feeling_. Notice that her _eyes_ are definitely Reggie's,
especially the expression. Awww... As for the rest of it, I'm perfectly
_aware_ that Reggie did _his_ experiment while it was daylight, but hey! You
think I'm gonna draw a classic full out Mad Scientist picture and NOT have it
take place during a Dark and Stormy Night? Yeah right! ;) (And speaking of
classic cheesy old-movie style looks, click HERE
to see a black and white version of the above. I just couldn't resist...)
This is the third of the "Before They Were Supervillainesses" Switchverse
pictures, and if you look at all three, you'll soon realise that they all have
this sort of..._ominousness_ to them--while showing their original "normal" self,
I also foreshadow what's going to happen to them shortly, either in the background
or in the whole picture itself (as with this one). That was very much on purpose,
that feeling of...darkness...because, after all, what happens to Elmyra Sputterspark,
Dr. Regina Bushroot, and Bunny Flood is _not_ pleasant, is it? Also, hey. These
are _villians_. Darkness is just appropriate on general principles. ;)
"Ah, a supervillianess's work is never done." Third
in the "Switchverse" series. And HERE we see Elmyra "Gigawatt" Sputterspark in
_her_ element! ;) She's got the same long brown hair that Megavolt USED to
have; it's fried but it's still there. The reason being, I'm guessing that
not ALL of his hair-loss was due to electricity--some of it might just be
male-pattern baldness. (He IS middle-aged, right? Well...in his mid-to-late
'30s, anyway. By my reckoning, both he and Darkwing are about 35 when the show
starts, and 37 by the end. Old enough for _some_ guys to lose their hair,
anyway.) Well, obviously a woman wouldn't (normally) have THAT problem. Also
notice the backwards colour scheme--which I really did only to be different,
not to say that she's a "Nega" version of him or anything.
I spent forever drawing this lair, and I think it REALLY fits Megavolt...and
since Gigs _is_ him, only female, that is appropriate. Notice the giant light
bulb; I went and got a real light bulb and figured out what the inside looked
like by holding it up to another bulb that was on. This hurt my eyes. I also
got the fingers right on the handle that is holding:
(Negaduck voice)
_the switch_
--by twisting my own hand around backwards to try to look at it from that angle.
Ah, yes. Better Artwork Through Self-Injury. :P Some people practice method
acting, I practice method-drawing. Whatever. At any rate, with a mysterious
computer panel full of colourful blinky buttons and interesting levers,
electrical cords all over the place, a giant light bulb, and:
_the switch_
--I think Megavolt himself would be PROUD of his "sister". That is, if he
could even remember where he is or what he's doing at the moment. The
nickname "Gigawatt" is a reference to the movie Back to the Future, which
_I_, at least, always think of first when I hear that word. (Doc Brown
shrieking, "ONE POINT TWENTY ONE GIGAWATTS?!!"). In the Back to the Future
_cartoon_, Doc's voice was played by Dan Castelleneta, who, of course, played
Megavolt himself on Darkwing Duck! So it ties around rather cleverly, I think.
Frankly, I have no idea at all what will happen when Gigs throws:
_the switch_
--but I think it might not be a good idea to stick around and find out; don't
you? ;)
The font I used for both her and Megavolt's names is the Harry Potter font--for
those of you who were thinking it looked familiar! Hey. Lightning-bolt
letters, are lightning-bolt letters. :)
And HERE is a black and white version of the above.
Because _all_ mad scientists should be shown this way, sooner or later. :) (Also,
I think this particular "lair" looks like something out of Captain Proton!,
almost...)
"In the name of Jupiter, EAT VOLTAGE!" Yes,
I HAVE gone off the deep end...why do you ask? Hey. They both have lightning
powers, and, being both a Darkwing Duck _and_ Sailor Moon fan, it was bound to
happen sooner or later...At any rate, I think this picture proves that just
because you CAN mix Disney and anime...doesn't necessarily mean you _should_.
:P
But in the meantime, how do you want your youma...regular, or extra crispy?
Shocking Destiny... And
this is what Gigawatt USED to look like...before her...er, change. Here we see
young Miss Sputterspark at about age 17--shortly before The Accident happens that
will change her from a sweet, earnest, brilliant little geek into a crazed
supercharged supervillainess. (It's not _much_ before...the outfit I have her
wearing is, in fact, a "feminized" version of the very last outfit Elmo
wore--what he had on when he started running on the treadmill on the night of the
prom.) I wish I had been able to make her features look more feminine, but oh well...at
least she's still kind of cute. ;) Notice the retro look of the clothes--the big wide lapels,
the huge flat buttons (my dad's old coats from around this time period had buttons like that), and,
of course, the BELL-BOTTOMS! :P I dunno; I think it's actually a rather _nice_ look on her, and the
hairdo is cute too. Anyway, according to _my_ opinion, the reunion in "Clash Reunion" was from TWENTY
years ago, not just 10 (I really can't see Darkwing as being only 27 years old and acting that "middle-aged-fatherly",
myself) and so that's why the clothes are this way--I see the flashback part of that episode as having taken place in the year
1973, not 1983.
The background is symbolic--it's lightning bolts, of course, but I made them all faded out (instead of the FLOURESCENTLY bright
colours I would _normally_ use for lightning) because they're not supposed to mean that she means, or "stands for", lightning or the power
of electricity _now_...instead, the bolts are meant to sort of subtly _foreshadow_ her future. (Her _near_ future...)
And I trust I _don't_ have to explain why she's holding a light bulb? Thought not. ;)
The Electric Company! "HEEEEEEYYYYY....YOOOOOUUUUUUUUU....GUUUUUUUYYYYYYSSSSSSSS!!!!!!"
(I couldn't resist. ;)) This picture takes a bit of explaining...well, you see, I post on
this Sonic the Hedgehog messageboard, and one of the people there put out a
request one day--she asked if anybody could draw her fan-character, Aura Starfire,
as "using one of her powers". (Aura's powers are fire, lightning, and teleportation,
for the record.) Well, _I_ instantly leapt in with "Lightning! WHOO! Yeah! I
can do that!" (I mean, heck, if I'm not used to drawing electrical powers by _now_,
what with all my pictures of Megavolt (in different forms) not to mention the occasional
drawing of Lum or Sailor Jupiter...then I _never will_ be used to it.) But then I told her,
"I don't know if I'll be able to restrain myself from making it a crossover picture and putting
in OTHER electrical characters WITH her..."
Her response was: "Well, she's a dimensional traveller too, so go ahead! The more the merrier!"
BWAHAHA.
She asked for it! And she got...THIS! >:) I just squished as many electrical characters as I could in
there--mostly fan-made, but a couple canon, simply because I wanted to represent more universes and
I just don't KNOW that many fan-characters. Anyway, from left to right, we have:
--Dr. Electra Ampere Farad and, on her shoulder, Zippy the Wonderpest! (I just recently read the stories with these two for the first time, and LOVED them to pieces...but I can't get ahold of the author to tell her how much I loved them, because all her e-mail addresses are dead. So I decided to do the next best thing--_draw_ her characters, as a tribute. If any of the crew from "High Voltage Studios" sees this...take it as a compliment! :))
--Behind them: Sailor Jupiter, of course! ;)
--Next to Dr. Farad: Electra the Hedgehog. (Yes, I DID put the two Electras next to each other on purpose. Notice
they're also _looking_ at each other.) This is my own character, the first Sonic universe character I ever made up. I
made her up in 1996 and started watching Darkwing in _2002_, so the fact that she is an electrically-powered rodent with a
yellow-and-blue colour scheme is TOTAL COINCIDENCE. Honest. Anyway, she only appears in one finished story of mine, "Shadows
of the Future", but also shows up in a couple unfinished ones, and has been around for a while. Her electrical powers are really
very limited. I mean, if she tried using them in front of Megavolt, he'd laugh in her face, I'm not kidding. :P She is holding
a book about ancient cities because that's her main interest--she wants to be an archaeologist.
--Next we have Aura Starfire, the star of our show! :P Well, she's the one I was actually ASKED to draw, anyway. I don't know if
she should really be quite as _short_ as I drew her here, but hey. Amusing fact: One of her nicknames is Sparky. Yes. SPARKY. I kid you not.
--Behind her: Lum, from Urusei Yatsura. I have NO idea why she's doing bunny-ears behind (my) Electra's head; it just seemed like
a funny idea at the time. ("The time" being 3:30 in the morning. of course.)
--And last but not least, Gigawatt! I was originally going to use Megsy in the picture, but then decided to go with his Switchverse
counterpart in order to keep the all-female theme going. Actually, we ended up with even _more_ of a feminist theme than I had originally
planned: Not only are all these characters females, but they were all CREATED by females. I was almost tempted to name this picture--wait
for it:
Girl POWER.
(rimshot)
"Easy Financing Available!" And finally, a decent
picture of Tsunami, the female Liquidator...or, rather, her former self--Bunny
Flood, evil businesswoman ("HEY! That's MY old title!" complains Morgana from
the sidelines) extraordinnairre. Please pardon me if I didn't draw her muzzle
quite right; I've _never_ drawn a dog character before in my life. (Well, not
counting Megavolt, who MIGHT be a dog, but I think he looks more like a rat.)
Anyway, as per usual, she's got a feminised version of Bud Flood's outfit, and in
this case, I made all the "trim" (fingernail polish, belt, etc.) blueish-green to
mean "water". Although that's made AMPLY abundant by the background, which is blue
and full of bubbles (those bubbles were a PAIN IN THE ARSE to draw, by the way :P) and
in which is swimming quietly..._lurking_, you might say--her future alter-ego.
Bwahahahahaha...
"Wanna PLAY?!" This is "Wisequacker"...the
Switchverse (female) version of Quackerjack. She is NOT pretty...but then
again, you actually _expect_ anybody who even vaguely looks like
_Quackerjack_ to be PRETTY? But...she does have a certain...style...of her
own...in a creepy way...
I'm especially happy about the name; I was at a total loss as to what to name
her until I found "wisecracker" listed as one of the LAST synonyms for joker,
entertainer, amusement, etc. in my thesaurus and went, "HEY! You can turn
_this_ word into a pun with "quack", too..." Hee hee.
Anyway, it's a fairly cool picture, I think, in terms of artwork and
style...but it's not for the faint of heart, as clowns are inherently creepy
and Wisequacker is creepy _for a clown_, so...don't say I didn't warn you.
"I am the terror that flaps in the night! And a
natural blonde, too." Finally...the Switchverse GOOD guys! Or, gals,
actually. ;) Here we have Lady Darkwing and Amelia "Runway" McQuack, in a
picture I must say I'm rather proud of. Both characters' expressions and poses
are JUST like their original male counterparts'; you can practically HEAR Lady
Darkwing saying "Let's get dangerous!" and Runway McQuack seems to be saying
something like, "Gee, uh...I dunno, DW." :P I even managed to make a female
version of somebody as HUGE as Launchpad without making her ugly--Runway
is actually kinda cute, in a break-you-in-half-with-one-finger kinda way. And
the whole picture is very stylised and rounded looking. Definitely one of my
best efforts.
Cat-fight! The Switchverse equivalent of "My Valentine Ghoul", basically. Here, we see
(lady) Darkwing and Nemesis vying for the attentions of the beauteous wizard Morgan McCawber...who is getting quite
SICK of it and probably about ready to toss around a little pudding-spell action. :P I MEANT to draw Morgan
long ago, when I first got the Switchverse idea...and I just _now_ got around to it. Er...mas vale tarde que nunca?
Heh...
"KEEEEEEEEEN _GEAR_! I can't wait to see the Attack
of the Zoooooooombie Slugs from Mars..." Gilbert (Gil) Mallard. What can
be said...regardless of gender, regardless of _universe_, Gosalyn is ALWAYS
gonna be a little troublemaker!
Notice that I "Nega"ed the colours of her outfit to get Gil's, and he still
has long hair, because, hey. It's rebellious and annoys his adoptive mom
(Darkwing/Dot Mallard), so that's reason enough. "Nerf Girl" video games are
the Switchverse's equivalent of "Whiffle Boy" in case you were wondering.
"Blathering Blatherskite!" As FURTHER proof
that I have gone off the deep end...here's the Switchverse version of
_Duckburg's_ local superhero--Gizmoduck! Er...Gizmo...gal?
The odd thing is, I HATED Gizmoduck when I first met him on Darkwing, but now
that I've met the REAL Fenton and the "real" Gizmoduck, in their original
environment on DuckTales, I _adore_ the character! His living situation is
just like my own, I'm just as poor as him, I KNOW what it's like to live in a
trailer...and he's a sad, pathetic little loser who thinks he is nothing as
himself. And other people (Scrooge especially) don't do much to alleviate
this impression. So he makes me really feel for him. On the other hand, he's
hysterically FUNNY, coming up with bizzarre wonky schemes and going into
"characters" to fool people--including disguises and accents--at the drop of
a hat. Gizmoduck's super-brave honourable "perfect knight" personality isn't
the REAL Fenton at all-it's a character he's putting on, and DuckTales rarely
lets you forget the real person inside the suit. On Darkwing, they treat that
role he plays as if it IS the real him. Anyway, I set out to draw him, and
somehow ended up Switching him instead--and I got Gizmochick as well! Two
identities for the price of one. I think Gizmochick turned out fairly cool,
considering I normally can't draw mechanical/robotic things AT ALL.
Again, as is the main thing I try for with my "Switchverse" characters, she
has the right EXPRESSION on her face to be Fenton--nervous, confused, and more
than a bit clueless. Whatever the adding machine and the calculator are telling
her about Scrooge's accounts, it appears to not be GOOD news...and she has NO
clue what to do about it. "Don't ask ME", her expression seems to say...
At the hop! Here we see four DuckTales
characters--in the FIFTIES! In the front are Gandra Dee and Fenton Crackshell, dancing. (How could I RESIST the chance
to dress up somebody named Gandra Dee in '50s clothes, I ASK you?!) and
behind them, preparing to take the juekebox apart and "improve" it, and just
loungin' around lookin' cool with a strawberry milkshake, are Gyro Gearloose
and Launchpad McQuack, respectively.
I had FUN with the costumes for this. Notice that the style of everybody's
outfits have been changed...but they are still in the same basic COLOUR-SCHEME
as the originals! ;) Fenton and Gandra are just your basic everyday teenyboppers,
(I had fun with Fenton's T-shirt...but then again, if he DIDN'T belong to the Math
Club when he was in high school, I will be very surprised...) I copied
Gandra's saddle-shoes off of my own. Yes, I own a pair of saddle-shoes...WHAT?!
Gyro is done up a little more formally rather than in cool modern "young" clothes;
he's an INVENTOR, what does he care about fashion?
He's kind of the classic nerd, with the pens in his pocket and the bow-tie
and all. Still, I think he looks totally precious in this outfit.
Launchpad...well, I was trying for a "bad-boy" rebel biker look, with him.
However, when I made it BROWN, like LP's jacket, it turned
out looking more like a bomber-jacket than a biker! I'm not sure how '50s
it is. But notice that in place of the usual goggles on top of his head, he now
has 3-D glasses. ;) Anyway, I think LP looks damn COOL in his outfit, that's a
really great look for him! Much more serious and dangerous than usual.
However..not QUITE as dangerous and cool as he'd like you to THINK he is. For
one thing, no cool, tough, motorcycle-gunning, leather-jacket-wearing loner rebel
would even CONSIDER wearing 3D glasses on top of his head, and strawberry milkshakes
are not exactly the most "macho" of drink orders. ;)
This picture was my entry for the July 2002 "Detamina" Awards; the theme was "Your
favourite characters in the '50s."--and, somehow, it won second place! That's what
the award picture down at the bottom of the page is for.
I have TOO MANY favourites to choose from, but what made me go with DuckTales
is the obvious pun name of Gandra Dee, and the fact that I ADORE Fenton, her
boyfriend. Gyro and Launchpad are two other favourites from the show, so
that's why they're here. You can kinda consider this a Darkwing picture,
since two of the people in it are crossover characters.
Also, I must point out, that even though it's called "Duck to the '50s!"...
technically two of the people in it are geese. ;)
"Trouble Cubed!" My first piece of Quack Pack fan-art, and after only watching the show for less than a week, too. The characters depicted are also in
DuckTales, though, so it goes in that category as well...
Anyway, meet the characters who are, in my opinion, the main reason to watch Quack Pack--the TEENAGED versions of Huey, Dewey, and Louie! The fact that they were allowed to age in the
FIRST place is truly excellent, exponential and extreme (as they would say)--I mean, cartoon characters? AGE?! DISNEY cartoon characters?!--but not only that, but they're well-written.
They're definitely teenagers, but also definitely still have their old personalities. This was drawn for the August 2002 Detamina Awards--as far as I know they've never actually had
a rock band (but it would NOT at all surprise me), but I would've drawn them doing SOMEthing, I'm sure. I CANNOT like characters this much without drawing them sooner or later...
The Detaminas just gave me a theme to work with. Heh. I gave each of them the instrument that I feel best suits their personality--Huey, the "leader", who wears the flashiest, loudest colour--red
--plays the loud, flashy, lead guitar (which is of course also red. ;)) Dewey, the "brain", is playing the keyboards, as I've always felt keyboards are a more "brainy" kind of instrument. (They require
dexterity and being able to keep your mind on several things at once, much more than strength or endurance.) And last but not least, patient, faithful Louie, always in the rear, always thought of last,
always backing up and supporting the others from behind (when he FEELS like it)...of course, has to provide their backbeat, on the drums.
Probably you had already figured OUT why I had each of them playing what they are, but I felt like saying it anyway. :P As for their outfits and hairstyles, I modified them just slightly to make
them look a little more "rock-star-ish" (yes, I KNOW that Dewey doesn't have a braid...) but otherwise more or less left them alone.
The name of the band is "Trouble to the Third Power" and it fits them
PRETTY damn well...one of them alone is formidable, but when they JOIN forces,
whoah-hoah, look out, world! Back on DuckTales, as ten year olds, they did
things like lose all of Scrooge's fortune in like one DAY and one time they
had the entire world thinking it was Saturday instead of Friday, which, as a
side-effect, almost got Scrooge and Fenton executed!
But that's piddly stuff. Small change. As teenagers, they once accidentally brought about the destruction of the UNIVERSE! No, I'm not kidding.
They DID eventually put it back how they found it... At any rate, these terrorising teenaged triplets are trouble cubed, indeed!
Edit: (September 3, 2002) This picture won third place in the Detamina Awards for August! (Well, I suppose "three" is appropriate, somehow...) :P
It's WONDERSWAN! Don't even ASK...I'm not sure which show this would go into...Okay, the deal is,
there's this hand-held video-game console, in Japan, called the "Wonder-Swan". Yes, that is its real name. :P The instant I heard that,
I thought, "Hey, that sounds like it should be a superhero from the Darkwing or DuckTales universe!"
And, being me, it's no sooner thought than actually drawn. :P I had fun with her look...it's got many influences from various things. The spandex jumpsuit,
flowing red cape, and letter on her front are all classic superhero fare. The cyber-armour, with the TRON-like circuitry and buttons and wires and everything,
are because she IS, after all, named after a video game system. (I'm not sure what her powers ARE, aside from flying. Perhaps she can communicate with/control
computers at will, turn herself into an electrical impulse and travel through the internet to get around the world very quickly...something like that. Oh, and of course, as a
side-effect, she can kick absolutely anyone's ARSE at any video game. :P) The eyes are a bit more anime than Disney, because it's a Japanese video game system she's named
after. And the curly hair and thick high heels on the boots are meant to look sorta retro-'40s--like from the old, classic days of Superman, or something. Just kinda retro, is what I
was going for.
This is not a "real" character that I'm planning to actually write into a story anywhere, just a joke, really. I suppose I COULD use her somewhere, but...I dunno...
(Drawn August 12, 2002).
Willow Barclay This was basically just an
experiment, and my first attempt at drawing anything even vaguely in the
Darkwing universe at all. After seeing Bushroot's failed attempt to make a
female mutant-plant duck bride, I kinda wondered what one WOULD have looked
like. This eventually led to Regina Bushroot, Elmyra Sputterspark, and the
"Switchverse" itself, but first, I drew this. Willow Barclay turned out to
be sort of a...duck _dryad_, not the same kind of plant as Bushie at all.
Her last name comes from a Star Trek character that Bushroot strongly reminds
me of: Reginald (!) Barclay (he's a shy, lonely, pathetic little "outcast"
nerd who goes around _making_ friends--literally--on the Holodeck, and is
known for being a coward and made fun of by his comrades...and he even once
had the nasty nickname "Broccoli"!--a vegetable? See? See? ;)) "Barclay"
also sounds a bit like "bark", as in on a tree of course. "Willow" is bloody
obvious, considering. It's also named after the character Willow from the
Landover books by Terry Brooks--she's got green skin, green hair, green eyes,
and turns into a tree once a month! She even had her baby as a _seed_! Yep,
same old, same old... ;)
"Warning": She's technically "au naturale", being a dryad. Somehow the idea
of a wild creature of the forest wearing clothes of _any_ kind just didn't
work, in my mind. But her hair-vines are _conveeeeeeeniently_ covering
anything that someone with wooden bark skin would even HAVE to cover...if
anything...
"Looks a bit Elvish..." A full-body shot of "Buddy"
in full rocker mode, based off the cartoon version of "Soul Music".
"The Messenger". A close-up of Buddy, again, playing his
guitar. Ain't he just PURTY? ;) (Yet another character I have an unhealthy
fascination with.) The title of the pic refers to the very last song he sings;
I like the song because it's rockin' but also rather sad and the lyrics strongly
tie into the plot. He wears an outfit much like this one in that particular
scene, too.
"Mort and Ysabell: Non Timetis Messor" Death's
adopted daughter and her husband, Death's apprentice....the happy couple.
Awww.... ;) Based off of the cartoon version of "Soul Music" again. The title
of the pic roughly translates as "Don't fear the Reaper" (snicker).
"Presto Goes to Hogwart's!" A crossover pic
with the Harry Potter universe that I'm rather proud of, even if I do say so
myself. Here a somewhat older Presto, from shortly after the series ended,
finds out that even back in his own world...he STILL can't have a normal life
anymore. He's a wizard to stay, like it or not, and go to a wizarding school
he must. :)
"I think you've got the _wrong_ Diana..." Here
we see Diana the Acrobat, done up as...er..the _goddess_, Diana. For some
reason this picture seems to have a bit of a Disney-Hercules feel to it...
"Who, me??" Brooklyn tries to play all "innocent" after joining in on a time-honoured New York custom! ;) Well, they gotta try to _fit in_ in their new locale and century, huh? But I'll bet Goliath (off-camera) is having
NONE of it...
This is my first Gargoyles fan-art ever and done in a style I don't normally use, so go easy on me. :P
The...HARMLESS Trickster?! It's everybody's favourite elf-boy...Puck! My first attempt at drawing him. Yes, I realise I messed up on the face, but I tried...
Swordmaid and Sorcoress! Here we have a pair of (fraternal) twin Gargette characters that I made up just for the heck of it. Their names are Dawn (redhead) and Eve (blue one.) There's no WAY I could ever actually use them in a story, even an alternate universe one--a
VERY alternate universe, even--but once I had them made up, I liked them so much as characters that I couldn't make myself throw them away. And I had to draw them to "find out" what they'd look like. But don't ask what I was thinking or WHY I can't ever use them in a
story...you don't want to know.
Awwww... Here we see Dawn and Eve as hatchlings. Aren't they just pwecious? Okay, I'll stop talking like that. Don't ask why I chose Angela and Puck to be the other people in the picture...well, I like drawing Puck, and for Angela's excuse, I
wanted more practice drawing Gargoyles, I guess. I did this picture partially because I just wanted to, and partially for a challenge at NetRaptor's messageboard. (The challenge was to draw something "cute!"--other fandoms welcomed, not just Sonic.) Look carefully, 'cos this is about the ONLY
time you'll ever see Dawn acting "cuddly". She sure doesn't have that type of personality when she's full-grown...
Illustrations from Spellbound Do not look at these if you haven't read the story, or if you haven't seen or at least been "spoiled" up through "The Gathering":
All alone in the night... This picture, inspired by "House of Mouse", marks the first time I ever drew any member of the "Goof Clan". Poor Maxy just looks so _sad_ here, doesn't he? I'm not sure WHY...I just felt like drawing it that way. Maybe he's
sad because he feels left out--after all, his job (he's the parking valet) _does_ require him to be OUTside the club, away from all the fun (and disasters, but hey, that's part OF the entertainment at the House of Mouse. ;))
At any rate, doesn't he just look so _cute_? Aww, poor widdle puppy...(ruffles his head-fur)
NObody is safe from... --the SWITCHVERSE! Or is that the Spanish Inquisition? Nevermind. Anyway, no sooner had I decided I was starting to like Max (House of Mouse was the _first_ place I noticed him; I watched "Goof Troop" and "A Goofy Movie" AFTER that) than I was already creating his Switchverse counterpart.
Partially because it was so easy to come up with a _name_, this time...I mean, Max actually _has_ a feminised version of itself (Maxine), but for a lot of my other Switchverse characters, I had to really _stretch_ to find a name that sounded even REMOTELY like the original. ("Bunny Flood" comes to mind here...) Oy.
The Switchverse, by the way, is _not_ confined to the Darkwing Duck universe. Technically, so my silly theory goes, EVERY universe has its opposite-gendered version. (Yes, including THIS one. Which means that, whatever you are, there's a universe out there--at _least_ one, maybe several--where YOU are the opposite gender. Fun, huh? ;))
But there's no reason, I recently decided, why Goof Troop and Darkwing couldn't be taking place in the SAME universe--heck, why not _all_ the Disney "furry" cartoons, while we're at it? It's a big universe!--and that means that opposite-gender Goof Troop characters would come from the _same_ Switchverse, too. (And the same Negaverse...which means there's a "Nega-Goofy" somewhere
out there, and that's _not_ a guy I'd like to meet in a dark alley. Or a lighted one, for that matter.)
Anyway, sorry about the long blather there...I also rather like the background on this picture. I have no idea _why_ I thought a psychedelic background would go well with Maxine, but it somehow does. :)
Whassup, homey Goof? (giggles) This piece of insanity was taken _directly_ (except for the fact that I drew it from memory rather than a screenshot) from "House of Mouse", so blame THEM! Seriously...there was this short called "How to be Groovy, Cool, and Fly" (Goofy: _I_ want to be gravy, cold and lye!) in which they mocked--er, "talked about" various fashions of the last several
decades, starting with the '60s on. In the section about the '90s, they at one point had Goofy dressed up as a rapper, which just _tickled_ me for some reason. (Probably because he looked so strangely RIGHT in that outfit, in his own dorky way...) The dialogue during this bit is hysterical, too, and makes me want to quote it around the place. My favourite bit was when the narrator tells Goofy that "You want to
get down with your bad self!" and Goofy actually DOES... (I wasn't aware he even HAD a "bad self", let alone that he knew how to get down with it. (giggles)) I totally cracked up. I _wanted_ a screenshot of this bit, but, since screenshots from "House of Mouse" are very few and far
between (and I can't make my own), I did the next best thing and _drew_ my own picture. :) (And yes, another psychedelic background. They just go _well_ with Goofs, for some reason. What is it about the combination of psychedelic stuff and rap that just made me get "Groove is in the Heart" stuck in my head? Hmm...)
"You don't have to wear that dress tonight..." Oh, wait, wrong Roxanne. ;) Anyway, I FINALLY saw "A Goofy Movie", and right afterwards (well, on the same _day_, anyway) I drew this picture of Roxanne. It started off as a silly sketch, then, of course, ended up being polished and having shading added, etc. I don't know why I even BOTHER to call things a "silly little casual sketch" anymore,
I really don't. They NEVER _end_ up that way... :P I think she actually turned out fairly well? I think I'd get along fairly well with Roxanne if I met her, actually...she seems to be easy-going and nice, and a little less concerned with being "cool" than her boyfriend. (Heck, she gets along better with Max's dad than Max does, himself! She'll fit into this family well, yep. :))
Spoonerville: 2024! Okay, so we know that Max and Roxanne are "in luv" and, knowing Disney things, will probably get married someday so...what WOULD their kids look like, anyway? I mean, what with his black fur and her auburn hair...we're definitely talking DISTINCTIVE looking, to say the least. I got into a silly, experimental kind of mood and decided to draw one potential idea of what their kid
might look like. Meet Alexis (Lex or Lexy for short, NOT Alex or Al, thank you) Rochelle Goof, age 17, teenager of (dramatic voice) THE FUTURE! Of _course_ I don't think people will actually be dressing like this in only 20 years. They will NEVER dress like that except in cheesy sci-fi B movies. I made up this outfit for two reasons--one, as satire, to humourously over-emphasise the fact that she's from (dramatic voice)
THE FUTURE! and secondly, to show her lack of fashion sense. ;)
"Aphrodite...the Goddess of Love!" My first attempt at drawing Her Divine Pinkness. I drew this while at work, from memory, rather than while looking at a screenshot, but I still think it's pretty decent. The rich,
almost luxuriant effect on the colours was achieved by layering them and pressing down quite hard--but with just ordinary cheap Crayola coloured pencils! (Actually that's what I use for ALL my colour hand-drawn pictures...)
"The ELECTRONIC Messenger God..." What's a god to do,
if all his...er, existence, he's kept his job based off of the fact that he can
deliver information INSTANTLY...and all of a sudden, the Internet shows up and
EVERYBODY can do that? Easy--"upgrade", and become the God of E-mail! After
all, the system has lots of problems, so a can-do god with several millenia of
experience would definitely be able to find work in this field. ;)
Notice that his clothes are modern slacker-type looking, but they still kinda
resemble his original outfit? (I kept the colours the same, and the shirt is
long, loose, and drapey, almost like a toga.) The thing in his left hand is a
laser-pointer, in case you were wondering. It was the only staff/wand-shaped
item even REMOTELY connected to computers that I could think of...I wanted him
to be carrying a new object that parallelled the old one. And I'm _especially_
proud of the rocket-booster sneakers, as compared to the old-fashioned winged
sandals. They get the same job done, and are, at first glance, about the same
shape. You see a guy flying in the air with winglike things on his shoes, and
you GET the IDEA. Which is what I wanted...a modern messenger-god who still
called to mind the classic archtype. Well...in a bizzarely
technicolour-skinned, wonky stylised artwork, Disney kinda way, anyway... :P
Anyway, I wish we DID have a God of E-Mail we could beseech--especially a nice,
helpful guy like Hermes...the spam at my Hotmail account is SO bad, only
_divine intervention_ could possibly help me now! :P
"Hermod the Messenger" From the episode "Twilight of the Gods", here we have Hermes "moonlighting" as the Norse messenger god, Hermod. (Yes, that's his actual name.) Probably about the SHORTEST Viking in
existence... ;)
So sue me, I drew this mainly because I thought he looked cool in his other outfit, and that goatee is just SO him. It makes him look even _more_ like the beatnik he is! I also love the long hair...this is just a nice look for Hermes,
overall.
"In the Pale Moonlight..." Loki the Trickster, from the episode "Twilight of the Gods".
I rather liked this one-time villian. Well, okay, so he ACTED sleazy, but he LOOKED cool. That blue skin and platinum-blonde hair combo
(with just a dash of ice-green tint) just _screams_ "winter" or "ice". He _looks_ like somebody who intends to end the world by freezing it to death.
And the yellow and red eyes provide just the RIGHT amount of a contrasting colour, while also warning you that he is deranged and evil. I also
like the way they drew his...shape. I've _always_ thought that a trickster should be slender and sharp-featured, it just..._feels_ right. I've seen mythology books where they draw EVERY god character with a huge muscular "perfect"
body, just because they're a god...at all--rather than taking individual styles and so forth into account. The Disney version, stylised though it is, actually nails the core _essence_ of the character pretty well.
I drew this from memory, rather than a screenshot, but I did it RIGHT after watching the episode, and, aside from messing up his hair a bit (on purpose) he's pretty much "on-model". Yes, they really did make the "trickster God of Ragnarok"
_that_ bishounen. :P Why, I don't know, but I ain't _complaining_... ;)
I gotta brag a bit on some techniques I used on this picture...bear with me. :P First off, his expression and pose tell you he's _up to something_, but even more than THAT, I did all kinds of subtle things to make him look as if he couldn't
be trusted. Such as: He has _narrow_ eyes, which are partially obscured by his hair and a shadow, so you can't see into his "windows of the soul" very clearly...(and what you DO see, is _chilling_.) I put as many shadows on his face as I could
get away with, and placing him off-center in the picture, in addition to having him lean sorta to one side makes him look as if he's trying to hide, or is ready to bolt at any moment. Standing straight and true in the middle of the picture and
looking you straight in the eye is a _hero's_ pose; off-balance and shifty is the pose of a villian or rogue.
The Brothers Strong Go to School Awww...how sweet. Here we see the three Brothers Strong, as little kids. StrongMad looks confused as always, Strongsad has of course drawn a way-advanced looking picture for just a five year old or so, and StrongBad
is...already getting into trouble, of course! ;) Now, since they're different ages, they wouldn't all be in the same classroom, but hey. I just felt like drawing them together. (One could always argue that StrongMad got held back a few grades on account of being...the way
he is, and StrongSad got bumped _up_ a bit because of being the way HE is...)
Side-note: You see that picture Strongsad is holding? I drew that, a long time ago. I had to shrink it way down but it's still the same picture (it's a sort of Amazon warrior-chick riding on a pegasus, in case you can't see it very well.) Just wanted to let you know that,
so you don't think I cut-and-pasted somebody else's artwork or something. :P
Kei Kanashii, the Grey Sage Yes, I realise others have done this before, but I couldn't resist. Here is my version of one of the characters who _doesn't_ (so far) have a shown alternate version in
the "Japanese Cartoon" universe--StrongSad! (He's my favourite. Yes. Really.) This link is not just to the picture, but to a character page kinda thingie I wrote up about "Kei Kanashii" (which is just Japanese for "Strong" and "Sad") and explanations of _why_ I did the
picture the way I did. So if you want to know what the heck is up with the picture you'll see when you first click the link, just scroll down and read. Go on. It's not that long. Won't hurt ya. :P
Mirror Universe! Here we have my interpretation of...NEGAHomestar. He's not only evil, but is just as smart and devious as the "normal" Homestar is honest and stupid. Yeesh, talk about somebody you wouldn't want to run into in a dark alley.
Or a lighted one, either. (Oh, come on, you KNEW I had to "Nega" somebody at _some_ point, knowing my love of alternate universes. Just be glad I haven't SWITCHED any of these characters, yet! :P)
"I Was a Teenage Kitsune!" I have no idea...I set out to draw a generic pointy-eared youkai kind of person, but no specific character. Then partway through drawing the face I started thinking this person looked kinda like Shippo, only older...so then I
decided that's what it was and went for it. He's supposed to be about (physically) the equivalent of a teenager here; hence the name of the link. Of course he wouldn't really be wearing the same outfit (or a bigger _version_ of it, anyway) after all those years, but I just wanted
to find out what that outfit would look like on someone with more normal proportions. (shrug)
"Aristocratic Assassin: Sesshoumaru!" Yes, yes, yes, OKAY, I _realise_ that like everybody and their DOG (no pun intended) has drawn this character _long_ before I came to the series. Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, he's popular, I am only one of _many_ when it comes to
Sesshoumaru fangirls, I know...
...but he's so darn _pretty_, how can anybody expect me NOT to draw him? :P Anyway. This picture took me absolutely FOREVER to draw (his costume is _sooooooo_ detailed...) and came out in a really stylised way--halfway between modern anime and _actual_ old-timey Japanese paintings--that I rather
like. As for why he's holding the Tenseiga when he doesn't even _like_ it that much...well, I needed him to be doing _something_ with his hand. :P I figured maybe he's threatening somebody...I mean, sure, _we_ know the Tenseiga can't kill, but does EVERYBODY (in the show) know? Of course not! You
see somebody draw a bloody sharp-looking katana near you and take on a threatening position, your first instinct is NOT to just naturally assume it _can't_ hurt you.
Anyway, I do think this is one of my best pictures to date.
"Oh, dear me, was this yours?" Boo...HISSSS!! Yes, ladies and gentle-beings, it's our main villian. The guy so loathsome that to call him scum would be an insult to the word scum and so _slimy_ he'd have to go UP several flights to reach "bastard" status...Naraku!
Well, his humanoid borrowed/made/whatever body form, anyway. (Didn't feel like drawing that white baboon suit thing.)
I like this picture _as_ a picture, but try as hard as I could I just couldn't make it look like _him_. He looks too young, and not sinister enough. Oh, well.
This DESPITE all the sinister-ising things I put into the picture, such as: red eyes, for just a hint of the demonic nature...flame colours behind him, as in _hellfire_ (the red and yellow colours behind Shippo are a _sunset_; this is hellfire), shadows over the top part of his face, a sinister
smirk and sneaky sideways glance, and last but not least, I deliberately did his hair in those weird-looking long, loose, thick strands to give the impression of snakes, or maybe tentacles...even, perhaps, _spider_ legs? At any rate, it's supposed to be vaguely creepy looking.
Oh, and the thing "in" his hand is supposed to be a Shikon shard, of course. (That's the "was this _yours_?" of the link title, as I'm sure you have guessed. He just stole another shard from the good guys and is happy about it, is the idea.)
The Terrific Twosome! Would it be too much of a
horrible pun to say they're well-nigh...unstoppable? (shot) Thought so.
Anyway, here we see Ron showing off his "Mad Karate Skillz" (or possibly
his Leet Kung-Fu Skillz) while Kim smiles indulgently and Rufus is like,
"Oh, _brother_." Despite the fact that Ron's hands are way weird (I suck at
drawing side-on poses like that), I think this isn't _too_ terrible for a very
first try at these characters...
"Oh, I'm sorry. Did you want to rant some more?" Here, everybody's favourite snide
henchperson begs to differ with Kermit the Frog's philosophy. (snicker) Now,
THIS picture, I like, I don't mind tellin' ya. I think it came out in a real
cool freaky stylised way, all glowing and like...plasma and transparent and stuff.
I did it all in just two colours and with such BRIGHT colours against such a
dark background on _purpose_--she is a harsh, sharp-edged, extreme kinda gal, so
her picture should be the same way.
Even deranged mutant supervillians need some down-time now and then!
The first Kim-Possible-related picture I drew (which tells you something about me :P), here we
see Lord Monty Fiske/Monkey Fist, spending a nice quiet evening at home. Drinking a cuppa
tea...reading a book...perfectly normal and innocent. Okay, so he happens to be holding the book
with his FEET, but hey... :P I know the proportions are screwed up, but drawing them correctly would
force me to re-do the entire couch and either put the book so far away from him that it would be awkward
to read, or else re-do his entire _pose_ so that the book is closer, but the proportions are correct. Either
one would be a pain to end all pains, so I figured, hey, it's not that realistic-looking of a show anyway, so
why not go easy on myself for a change, huh? ;)
I love his outfit, though. Actually, that's one of the main reasons why Monkey Fist is perhaps my fave villian
on the show--he's got awesome fashion sense. Incidentally, according to the _Chinese_ calendar, the New Year isn't until February 9th in 2005.
So when I drew this picture, it was still the year of the...guess what. (snickers evilly)
"Into the Outdoors with Saucepan and Frilly Skirt" This is my character from "Kingdom of Loathing", a very humourous and silly on-line RPG. The actual graphics in the game are stick figures, but I felt like "fleshing her out" a little more just to imagine what she might _really_ look like. I did the lines thick
to keep _some_ of the original simple, cartoony style intact, however. Here we see Zelynda, wearing the Frilly Skirt and traversing a spoooooky place with two of her trusted familiars. We'll ignore the fact that you're only allowed to have ONE familiar with you at a time, heh.
Some explanations: No, she would not still be wearing a saucepan on her head as a helmet at that point, but I drew it to show that she's a "sauceress". Yes, I did name Morrissey the Grue after Morrissey the singer--he's rather "dark" and "gloomy", it seemed appropriate for a creature that spends its whole life in darkness... No, we don't
actually know what Grue(s) look like. I just made this appearance up. (In the game, you see eyes looking out of a fuzzy patch of blackness, but I don't think that's _fur_, I think that's just a thing of darkness put around the eyes so that you'll see them. They can't be TOO cute and cuddly--they _eat_ adventurers the second they come near!)
My character has since gotten a LOT tougher, but I drew this back when I hadn't been playing all that long.
Does she know where her towel is? Another picture done for a "challenge" at NetRaptor's messageboard, here we see a very confused Sally asking Jolt why Nicole is acting so weird... The challenge was #42, and I jokingly suggested that it should have something to do with the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.
This suggestion was taken _seriously_, and then I realised I could come up with very little about anything to do with Sonic the Hedgehog universe and HHG. I eventually came up with this, which at least gave me a chance to draw my old character "Jolt" the Squirrel again. (Yes, her fashion sense really is THAT bad. She's stuck in the
'80s, but then again so am I. Although not to _that_ extent.) The poster on the wall behind them is a shruken-down version of a poster also drawn by me; and trust me, you don't want to see the full version, it's not very good. (The proportions are _hideous_...) Anyway. Just a silly little bit of crossover fun. :)
Amelia Earhardt, Eat Your Heart Out! This is Della Little, Dinky's wife from the original books. Yes, you heard me..._wife_. (She doesn't appear on the show). She's a cool character, though--easily one of the strongest females in the series (which are a pretty good read, for children's books, but do suffer from
some problems--an overly "traditional" view of gender roles being one of them) and I liked her for the small amount of "screen time" she _did_ get. Which wasn't that much. But she's just as good of a pilot as him and quickly goes from fainting damsel who needs to be rescued, to rescuing people on her own! (pumps fist in the air) Yeah!
You go, girl!
Anyway, this is not the way she actually looks; I decided to draw her in the style of the Littles on the _cartoon_ version, just because I could. The black hair is
right, and the outfit is pretty much correct, at least according to one of the covers, but the _book_ Tinies (that's the name of the species as a whole) do _not_ have pointed ears, have completely different tails, and there are lots of individual differences with the versions of the characters, such as
hairstyles, clothes, some personality traits, and even in some cases different names. But Della is a cool character and the Littles are cuter with pointy ears, so I combined a book-only character with the style of the cartooon. Why? Because I could. :)
"Any Landing You Can Walk Away From..." No, _not_ a picture of Launchpad McQuack that somehow got seperated from the Darkwing/Ducktales section... it's the character who may very well be Launchpad's..."prototype": Cousin Dinky, from "The Littles"!
In case you're not familiar with the show, "The Littles" was a DiC cartoon (a foreign, dubbed cartoon, of course) from the early '80s. It's loosely based off a series of children's books by the same name and is about a hidden society of tiny humanoids who live inside the walls of houses, called "The Littles". The only human who
knows about them is a young boy named Henry Bigg, and the main family of Littles that we see on the show lives inside _his_ house. My two favourite characters were Lucy Little, an eight-year-old tomboy who manages to be brave without being _foolish_, and "Cousin Dinky", who was obviously _meant_ to be the comic relief but
comes across as oddly sympathetic. Dinky is a ditzy, not-all-there aviator who dresses like a WWI flying ace, is almost completely unfazed by crashes (a good thing, considering that at least 80% of his landings are...on the rough side!), can _fix_ anything, and even _says_ lines like "Well, you know what they say...any
landing you can walk away from..." and "I can fly anything with wings". AND, the other character he most often interacts with is a much shorter, grumpy, crotchety-but-tough old dude (Grandpa) who is always making sarcastic remarks at the ditzy pilot's expense.
HMMMM...(raises an eyebrow at Disney) Not to outright _accuse_ anybody of anything here, but we _should_ bear in mind that "The Littles" started in 1983, while DuckTales started in 198_7_...
Anyway, Dinky was a favourite character when I was a kid and, now that I've rediscovered "The Littles" in reruns, I can still see _why_ I liked him. He is just _so_ fun...(giggle) As for the show itself, well, I'm glad to see that it _has_ aged well, at least in my opinion. It's clever,
has lots of cute details, and makes good points without being preachy about it. One of the more..._intelligent_ "cheesy Saturday morning cartoons". Just watch out for the theme song--as any child of the '80s can tell you, it's almost _dangerously_ catchy. (I _remembered_ the tune and some of the lyrics, even after _20 years_...)
"This was NOT in my contract!" Er, this one's a bit on the obscure side...well, it's from an anime called "Puchi Puri Yuushi", which is so far only available in fan-sub form. In one episode, the main character (Yuushi)'s father has made her a really stupid-looking
ultra-frilly pink dress, and expects her to be happy with it. She makes up a lame excuse and RUNS out the door as fast as she can, but I thought: What if there was a way to make him happy, without actually _wearing_ the thing? Then I thought that Cube, her sidekick, is also her servant and accustomed
to (most of the time) doing whatever she says....and THIS silly picture was the result. :P (As for the other person in the picture, that's _not_ "the young mistress"; that's Princess Grenda, my second favourite character (after Cube himself!) so far. She's the one most likely to be sarcastic and
mean to poor Cube if she saw him wearing that horrible dress, so of course, she had to see him. :P Yes, I AM always the meanest to the characters I love the most... ;))
"Oh! Young mistress! What have you gotten yourself into THIS time?!" And here's a drawing of the _original_ version of Cube, from the game "Princess Maker 2". I really don't have any other websites that this picture can go on, so I'm putting it here, because it's my site
and I can. ;) Anyway, originally this picture was going to have the girl lying unconscious and injured under a tree, but the pose, proportions, features, etc. turned out SEVERELY messed up (she would have to be in profile to make the pose work, and I totally _suck_ at drawing profile) so I eventually
gave up and now Cube is looking all horribly shocked at...nothing. Well, we're supposed to assume he's staring at something that's out of the frame of the picture. _What_ it is is up to you--hey, fun with Audience Participation! :P
"I'M science-fiction! YOU'RE a fairy tale!" Another whackazoid crossover; here we have Lum from Urusei Yatsura and Inuyasha from, well, Inuyasha. The reason she's grabbing his ear is because I couldn't think of where to put her arm, and because it was funny. :P
Two different shows, roughly two _decades_ apart. One a light-hearted modern-day science-fiction parody thing; the other a much more serious, darker, fantasy epic--but they do have something in common. (Besides the same author) They are, in one way or another, both based
off of the SAME mythology! So that's why I put those two characters together, specifically.
This was originally drawn in response to a challenge at the Rumic World messageboard to "draw a Rumiko Takahashi character in MS Paint". I thought by using the paintbrush tool and drawing freehand, I could get the picture done faster and show _something_ while
the challenge topic was still on the board. But as it turned out, this messy, scribbly, ugly, cartoony picture actually took a TON of work and time, and still doesn't look that good. (sighs) Aiyaa.
Oh, well. Maybe I can re-do it in my smoother style someday. For now, though...well, at least I got Inuyasha's expression about right! :P
"Muu-Tsu, Master of Hidden Weapons!" Er. Yeah. Don't ask. Basically, this is supposed to be Mousse from Ranma 1/2, only as a Lemming. No, not the actual real-life animals...the cute little critters with fluffy green hair and long dark
blue/purple robes, from those computer games. "Oh, NO!" Those guys. I recently got re-hooked on those games, and then I got the wonky idea to draw human characters as Lemmings for some reason. (shrug) Mousse _still_ looks pretty cool, though... (He does wear purpley robes
in some of the _manga_ artwork, and there is an actual Lemming character with hair about as long as his...Lomax!)
Chinese Tribe? That's because in one of the games there's 12 "Tribes" or cultures of Lemmings roaming their little world, and some of them are based off of real-life cultures, such as the Egyptians and Highlanders. So...why _not_ a Chinese Tribe as well...?
"See you, Space Cow-lem!" Yes...my silly season got even WORSE--I turned Spike Spiegel of Cowboy Bebop into a Lemming, of all people! :P
...personally, I think he made the transition between species rather _well_--he still has the right attitude, expression and pose, even though now he's cute and fuzzy. (Heck, the reason I wanted to turn him into a Lemming in the first place is because he ALREADY had a mop of fluffy
green hair, just like they do...it wasn't _too_ much of a stretch! :P)
But it remains to be seen whether Kat of "Animated Lust" fame will think this is adorable when she sees it...or KILL me! :P
"When Toon Disney Hits Tokyo..." Don't even ASK what sparked off THIS nutty idea. It's a crossover between Sailor Moon and Hercules: The Animated Series. Basically, the idea is that the Sailor Senshi are all
dressed up as the actual GODS their planets are named after--or, rather, the Herc the series _versions_ thereof. So, Sailor Mercury is dressed up as Hermes, Sailor Venus is dressed up as Aphrodite, Sailor Moon is dressed up as Artemis (that's the
closest I could get to a goddess who represents the Moon, on the Herc series), Sailor Mars is dressed as Ares, God of War, of course, and Sailor Jupiter is dressed up as Zeus, King of the Gods, Ruler of All. I think what gave me the idea in the first
place was the fact that Sailor Mercury has blue hair and wears a blue costume, and Hermes IS blue, with darker blue hair, and his outfit also includes form-fitting footwear that comes a good way up the legs, a tiny, ruffled miniskirt, etc. I tried drawing
Ami in his outfit, then when I saw how ADORABLE she looked, I just HAD to do them all. Including changing the cats, Luna and Artemis, into Pain-and-Panic style imps! (Which didn't take much effort, as cats are _already_ rather demonic. ;)) I did only the Inner
Senshi, because past Jupiter, the gods and powers get kinda mixed up, and the crossover wouldn't work any more...
I had to modify the outfits in a couple cases, as togas that hook over only ONE shoulder really...um...aren't for women. :P I also added some fingernail polish, jewelry, etc. for feminine touches...and also, sometimes, for the purpose of getting more of the
original god's colour onto the Sailor in question. Such as blue nail polish on Ami...obviously I couldn't turn her _skin_ blue...and the pink nail polish on Mina.
This is a shrunken version, the ORIGINALS of all these lovely ladies looked MUCH better. Click: HERE to see Sailor Mercury, Messenger of the Gods... HERE to see Sailor Venus, the Goddess of Love... HERE to see Sailor Artemis, Goddess of the Hunt and the Moon... HERE to see Sailor Mars, Goddess of War... HERE to see Sailor Jupiter, Ruler of Olympus, Queen of the Gods, and, last but not least... HERE to see Luna and Artemis (the cats) as Underworld Minions...with appropriate new names, too! ;)
Rei, the Handsome Shape-Shifter! A character
from Urusei Yatsura that I like for some reason, even if he IS as dumb as a
brick...(And don't LOOK at me like that, the episode he first shows up in is
actually _titled_ "Rei, the Handsome Shape-Shifter!" I'm just quoting...)
"Princess Zelda in a Royal Huff!" From the
Legend of Zelda cartoon, a scene from one of my very favourite episodes.
(She doesn't normally dress like this, in case you didn't know. This is a
nightgown.) An older pic, but not that bad.
"Lightcycle Warrior" From TRON! I like the bright,
stark colours of this picture...rather stylised.
"Greetings, Programs!" Another TRON-based pic, this
one's supposed to be of the character Tron himself. It's, uh, a little
deformed, but oh well. :P
"Meet Ranma Saotome--BOTH of him!". Here we see
both male and female Ranma, together. It's not my best work, but, ah well.
It was the first time I ever tried to draw him/her.
Mousse My favourite character from Ranma 1/2--the
nerdy, underappreciated, really dangerous but also really goofy, really smart
in some ways but really STUPID in others, slight-of-hand master, illusionist,
tragic man pining away for the love of a woman who treats him worse than
dirt...Mousse! He just kicks arse as far as I'm concerned. Not many other
characters can make me laugh and cry in the same scene. Sympathetic,
heart-string-tugging comedy relief is NOT an easy combination to pull off.
(Presto, Rincewind, and Fenton Crackshell all manage it for a few more examples,
but they're a rare breed.)
"I see you managed to get your shirt off!" ;)
(Recognise that quote, from "Galaxy Quest"?) From the KILLER battle-scene between
him and Ranma in his (Mousse's) intro episode.
"EAT SPATULA!" Ukyo Kuonji, one of my favourite
characters from Ranma 1/2, and a butt-kicking warrior-lady fast-food cook.
Yeah, it's that kind of show. ;)
"Fist of the White Swan". Yet another Mousse
picture; this one more dignified and quiet, and more based off of the manga
version. I TOLD you he's my fave.
Little Ranma Pictures. This is a bunch of
small ones that I thought it'd be easier to put all on one page.
And Last But Not Least...
A picture of your hostess. Here's ME, well, sort of,
done up cartoony-style as a wizard! "Robin Chesterfield" is the character's
name, not mine, in case you were wondering.
I won second place in the "Detamina" Awards for July, 2002 for my picture "At
the Hop", and third place in the August Detaminas for my picture "Trouble Cubed"! Click the image to go to Steph's animation site, "Detamina".
people have visited Captain Chaotica!!'s cartoon artwork page since August 9, 2002--
but they were all sucked into a dimensional vortex and never heard from again! BWAHAHAHA!
